Prompts tell Gemini what to do. And the better the prompt, the better the result. This guide explains how to write your first prompts for Gemini on your computer.

Before you use Gemini for Google Workspace

Gemini for Google Workspace is available when your Google account language is set to an English dialect. Additionally, some features are available in Spanish and Portuguese. Learn more about language availability.

What's a prompt?

A prompt tells Gemini what you want it to generate. Good prompts use natural language, as if you were giving instructions to a friend or colleague. And the best prompts provide the context, or the specific details, Gemini needs to provide a great response.

When you use Gemini for Google Workspace, you write prompts in Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail, Meet, Vids, or gemini.google.com.

Write a prompt in Docs

 
  1. On your computer, open a Google Doc file.
  2. In the document, click where you want to write.
  3. On the left, click Help me write .
     
  4. Enter a prompt that contains your instructions. For example:

    Imagine you are the lead on a project. Write an update to your executive leadership team on [Project X]. Include the current status for each business function and next steps. Use a formal, brief tone.

  5. Click Create
  6. Review the response.
  7. (Optional) Click Refine then choose how you want Gemini to change the content.
  8. When you're finished, click Insert.

Write a prompt in Sheets

 
  1. On your computer, open a new spreadsheet or tab in Google Sheets. The Help me organize sidebar will automatically open.
     
  2. Enter a prompt. For example:

    Imagine you are preparing for a customer meeting with a new client. Create a framework for researching the client's company in order to create a sales prospect.
     
  3. Click Create.
  4. (Optional) Click Refine then choose how you want Gemini to change the content.
  5. When you’re finished, in the preview, click Insert.

Write a prompt in Slides

  1. On your computer, open a presentation on Google Slides.
  2. Click the slide where you want to add the image.
  3. At the top, click Insert and then Image and then Create image with Gemini AI .
  4. In the panel on the right, enter a prompt. 

Tip: For better results, consider including the subject, setting, distance to subject, materials, or background. For example:

  1. (Optional) You can click Add a style to customize the image you create.
  2. Click Create to see several suggested images.
  3. (Optional)
    • Edit your prompt: At the top of the panel on the right, click the prompt. Edit your prompt and click Create.
    • See more suggested images: Click View more.
  4. When you’re finished, click Insert.

Write a prompt in Gmail

  1.  On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top left, click Compose.
  3. In the bottom left of the window, click Help me write (Labs)  and then Help me write
  4. Enter a prompt. For example:

    Write an email introducing a new team member who will be managing [product name]. Include details about their professional experience, accomplishments, and personal interests.
     
  5. Click Create.
  6. (Optional) Click Refine then choose how you want Gemini to change the content.
  7. When you’re finished, click Insert.

Write a prompt in the Gemini app 

  1. On your computer, go to gemini.google.com.
  2. If you’re not already signed in, sign in to your Google Account. Learn how to sign in.
  3. In the text box at the bottom, enter your question or prompt.
  4. Optionally, to add a file to your prompt, click Upload image or Add files .
    • The ability to upload files is only available in Gemini Advanced. 
  5. Click Submit .
