Migrate files from a Microsoft OneDrive account

File migration for the new data migration service is currently in beta and subject to the Pre-General Availability Offerings Terms in the Google Workspace Service Specific Terms.

File migration copies files and other related data from your Microsoft OneDrive business editions  to your organization’s Google Workspace users’ My Drive accounts. Except where indicated, perform the following steps in the Google Admin console of your target Google Workspace account (the account you're migrating to).

You must be signed in as a super administrator for this task.

Step 1: Connect to your Microsoft account
  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using an account with super administrator privileges (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Dataand thenData import & exportand thenData migration.
  3. At the top, click Go to data migration (New).
  4. For Microsoft OneDrive, click Migrate.
  5. Click Connect to Microsoft OneDrive and sign in as a Global Administrator with your Microsoft account. If you can’t connect, make sure you're using a Global Administrator account to sign in to Microsoft.
Step 2: Set migration scope

The new data migration service transfers files, folders, and permissions from a list of Microsoft OneDrive source users to target Google Workspace users. You can create a comma-separated values (CSV) file for the list, or you can update an existing file to match the required formatting.

To get details about users in your One Drive tenant, go to Manage Microsoft 365 user accounts.

Tip: Click Download sample CSV file to get an example file you can use.

If you're creating your own file:

  1. Open a spreadsheet program.
  2. In the first column, add the header Source OneDrive User.
  3. On separate rows, add the emails of Microsoft OneDrive users that you want to migrate. You can migrate up to 100 users at a time. Additional users will require a separate migration.
  4. Save the spreadsheet as a CSV file.
    Note: The file must be smaller than 10 MB.

  1. Upload the file
    1. In your Admin console, click Upload CSV.
    2. Select your CSV mapping file and then click Open.
    3. Click Tasks  to confirm that the mapping file is successfully uploaded
Step 3: Create and upload an identity map

You use an identity map to connect users on the source account to users on the target account. To get details about users in your One Drive tenant, go to Manage Microsoft 365 user accounts. You can also download a list of your organization’s Google Workspace users.

Tip: Click Download sample CSV to get an example CSV file that you can use.

  1. Open a spreadsheet program.
  2. In the first column, add the header Source Email.
  3. In the second column, add the header Destination Email.
  4. Using valid email addresses, add your organization’s Microsoft OneDrive source accounts and their target accounts in Google Workspace.
  5. Save the spreadsheet as a CSV file.
    Note: The CSV file must be smaller than 10 MB and have fewer than 1000 rows of data.

  1. Upload the file
    1. In your Admin console, click Upload CSV.
    2. Select your CSV mapping file and then click Open.
    3. Click Tasks  to confirm that the mapping file is successfully uploaded

Note: External users do not need to be added to the identity map. Their permissions are migrated by default.

Step 4: Start a migration
  1. Click Start migration.
    Note: This action grants domain-wide delegation and creates a client ID for Data migration (New) in the target account. For more information, go to Control API access with domain-wide delegation.
  2. You can see updates on the information below in real time while the migration is in process:
  • Discovered tasks: Total number of tasks, such as crawling, creating, and updating files, folders and permissions
  • Warning: Tasks that were completed but failed to complete as expected
  • Failed: Tasks that failed to migrate due to an error
  • Skipped: Tasks that were skipped because they were completed in a previous migration
  • Successful: Tasks that were successfully completed
  • Users processed: Number of users whose migration completed 
  • Time elapsed: Time elapsed since migration started
  • Files discovered: Files migrating to Google Drive
  • Folders migrated: Folders successfully migrated to Google Drive
  • Files migrated: Files successfully migrated to Google Drive
  • Files skipped: Previously migrated files that were skipped 
  • Files failed: Files that failed to migrate in Google Drive
  • Discovery issues: Folders from the source account that could not be crawled
  1. You can export the report at any time once the migration starts. Click Export migration report.
  2. If the Tasks list doesn't automatically open with the exported report, click Tasksand thenthe report link.
  3. Click Open in Google Sheets to open the report in Google sheets.
Optional: Stop a running migration

If you need to stop a migration while it’s in progress, click Stop migration.

Stopping a migration may take a few minutes, and it does not rollback the migration process. Any files migrated before the stop won’t be deleted from Google Drive.

Step 5: Exit a completed migration
You won’t be able to run delta migrations or access migration and user reports after you exit a completed migration. 

You can run delta migrations and review information about a completed migration in the Admin console until you exit the migration. If you need to start a new file migration from Microsoft OneDrive, you must exit the existing migration.

Optional: Exporting logs

If you want to save logs from a completed migration, click Export migration report and Export user report.  

Exiting the migration

  1. Click Exit migration and then Exit and delete migration.
