Supervised experiences for teens

If you can't see the option to set up a teen supervised experience yet, check back soon. This feature will be released to more eligible parents and teens throughout September 2024.

Teens with their own Google Account can use YouTube independently or link with their parent's account to set up a supervised experience. With a supervised experience, parents can gain insights into their teens' YouTube channel activity. These insights may spark in-the-moment learning opportunities and conversations about how to create safely on YouTube.

Either a parent or a teen can start the process to set up supervision, but both the parent and teen will need to agree to link their accounts before supervision gets turned on. Supervision can be turned off by either a parent or a teen at any time.

FAQs

Is supervision only available for teenagers?

While this experience is designed for parents and teenagers (ages 13–17 in most countries and regions), families can also link non-teen accounts in Family Centre. It's up to each family to decide if and how they want to use supervision on YouTube.

If you want to link accounts with someone older than a teen, you can follow the same setup steps.

You can also set up a supervised experience for children under 13 (or the relevant age in their country or region).

Can parents get email notifications about their teen's channel activity?

Parents will receive email notifications to get updates about their teen's channel activity, like when they post a new video or start a live stream. Email notifications can be turned off at any time if you no longer wish to get them.

What channel activity can parents see when supervising their teen?

Parents can view their teen's channel activity in Family Centre. Once accounts are linked, parents can see:
  • The channels that their teen owns and the names of the channels their teen can upload videos to. Parents can view info for these channels such as profile picture, channel banner, handle, bio and number of subscribers.
  • How many public, private and unlisted videos their teen has uploaded to their channels.
  • How many live streams their teen has hosted on their channels.
  • How many comments their teen has posted on other videos.
  • How many channels their teen subscribes to.

How is teen supervision different from pre-teen supervision or YouTube Kids?

Every family's relationship with media and technology is different, so we offer options for you to decide what's best for yours. These experiences are each designed for different age ranges and needs:

  • YouTube Kids: A separate app with content for children under 13.
  • Supervised experiences for pre-teens: An experience that parents can set up for children under 13 (or the relevant age in their country or region) who are ready to use YouTube. Parents can manage their content settings, controls and more.
  • Supervised experiences for teens: A voluntary experience for teens over the age of 13 (or the relevant age in their country or region) that gives parents insight into their teens' activities and interests on YouTube.
