Fix a Pixel phone that won't charge or turn on

To troubleshoot battery and performance problems on Pixel 7a and earlier, including Pixel Fold, you can use our self-help flow.

Fix battery or performance issues

Use the steps on this page to fix the following problems on your phone:
  • Won’t turn on
  • Has a black or blank screen
  • Turns on but won't charge
  • Turns on but turns off immediately

Hold the power button

First, try holding down your phone's power button for 5 to 7 seconds. Learn more about turning on your Pixel.

Troubleshoot your cable, power adaptor, wall socket and case

Important: For the best battery experience and charging speeds, we recommend using the Google 30 W USB-C power adaptor or any Programmable Power Supply (PPS) power adaptor rated for 30 W or more. You could also use other USB Power Delivery (PD) adaptors rated for 15 W or more, but actual charging speeds will be determined by your Pixel.

Check that your power adaptor and cable work
  1. Try charging another device with your power adaptor and cable.
  2. Check that the cable is securely connected to the adaptor and to your phone.
  3. Check that there's nothing in the port of your phone, like dust or lint.
  4. Try charging your phone with another cable or power adaptor.
Check if your charging accessory works with your Pixel phone?

If you get a 'Check charging accessory' notification, your cable or USB power adaptor may not be supported by your phone or is damaged. This results in your phone to charge very slowly or to not charge at all.

To fix the problem, try charging with a compatible cable and charger. Learn which power adaptor and cable to use to charge your phone.

Check that your wall socket works.
  1. Plug the charger into a wall socket.
  2. Plug in something else, like a lamp.
  3. Check that no accessories, like cases or battery packs, cover the sensors on your phone or press its buttons.

Troubleshoot your battery charge

Plug in your phone with a working cable, charger and wall socket, then wait one minute.

  • If you see a battery icon, your phone is powered off and is charging. You can restart right away.
  • To check if your phone is charging, open your phone’s Settings app then tap Battery.
  • On Pixel 2 and Pixel (2016), if you see a red light, your battery is fully discharged. If the red light is flashing, there isn't enough power to turn on. Charge your phone for at least 30 minutes before you restart it.

Troubleshoot your screen

Important: If you don't see a battery icon or red light after you plug in your phone, the issue could be with your screen.

  1. Press the power button for about 30 seconds.
  2. Wait about two minutes.
  3. Make your phone ring. You can call it from another phone or use Find My Device. Learn how
  4. If your phone rings, learn how to troubleshoot your screen. If it doesn’t, go to the advanced steps (below).
