Notifications when your shared location is updated

If you’re sharing your location with someone, Google Maps will periodically refresh your position on the map. This ensures that the person that you're sharing with gets an accurate, up-to-date sense of where you are.

You’ll sometimes see a message at the top of your screen or in your list of notifications, letting you know that your location has been updated.

Reduce how often you see this notification

There are ways to make sure that your location is updating in the background. This will make the notification appear less often.

Note: Exact steps may vary depending on your device.

On Android Pie: Minimise the notification

You can minimise this notification to make it less obtrusive. Next time you see the notification, long press it and choose Minimise.

On Android Oreo: Reduce notification importance

You can reduce the notification priority to make it less disruptive.

  1. On your home screen or app menu, long press the Google Maps app Maps. Then, tap Info.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Scroll down to 'People & Places' and tap Updates to your shared location.
  4. Select Importance Low (No sound or visual interruption).

Check for errors

  1. On your device, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle and then Location sharing.

Note: If there are problems, you'll see a warning message at the top of the screen.

Turn this notification off

Important: If you turn these notifications off, the location that you're sharing with others may not be refreshed, and is likely to become inaccurate.

Note: Exact steps may vary depending on your device.

  1. On your device, open the Google Maps app Maps.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Account Circle  and then Settings Settings.
  3. Tap "Notifications" and then Google.
  4. Scroll down to "Google location sharing (you)" and turn it off.
