Create a Google Earth KML file

  1. Go to https://earth.google.com

  2. Find the location that you want to map using the Search box in the upper-left corner.

    You can search the Google Earth map like you would Google Maps - For example, you can search by:

    • Lat Long (example: 47.666, -122.351)
    • City (example: Seattle) Address (example: Fremont Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103)
    • Point of interest (example: Space Needle)
  3. Press + New button or press File > New local KML file (Ctrl + K).

If you pressed the + New button, a box will pop-up, select the Local KML file and press Create.
  1. Rename the new KML file you are creating by pressing > Rename > Enter the name of the file > press Enter.

  1. Ensure you are in the 2D view, if you are in the 3D view, the Google Maps Content Partners team will not be able to process your data.

  1. Begin creating data:

    Polygon or path data

    A.  Select the Add path or polygon button.

    B.  A pop-up will appear in the upper right-hand corner informing you you are in edit mode. 

    C.  Begin (left) clicking points to create your path segment; when you are done drawing your path press Done in the upper right hand side to end your segment

    Alternatively, if you want to create a polygon simply make sure that your last point forms a loop and you will see ‘close shape’.

    D.  Press Save to project.

    E.  After pressing Save to project, you will be taken to an edit card which will allow you to change the name and description of the feature - this is optional but we highly recommend you add-in the name and any relevant/useful information.

    If you later want to edit the name/description, simply click on the feature and press Edit in the upper right hand side.

    F.  Once your feature is created it will be added under the project on the left hand panel.

    Point data

    A.  Select the Add placemark button.
    B.  A pop-up will appear in the upper right-hand corner informing you you are in edit mode; additionally there will be a blue pin marker that will appear on the map indicating the pin you are about to create.

    C.  (Left) click wherever you want to create a placemarker.

    D.  Press Save to project.

    E.  After pressing Save to project, you will be taken to an edit card which will allow you to change the name and description of the feature - this is optional but we highly recommend you add-in the name and any relevant/useful information.

    If you later want to edit the name/description, simply click on the feature and you will be able to edit the name/description as you want.

    F.  Once your feature is created it will be added under the project on the left hand panel.

     

  2. When you are done with all your edits, export your KML by either pressing⋮ >  Export as KML file or press File > Export as KML file (Ctrl + E).
