Connect third-party smart home devices in the Google Home app

You can remotely control third-party smart devices when you set them up in the Google Home app .

Important: If you want to set up a Google Nest, Home, Pixel, or Chromecast device in the Google Home app, visit Set up smart devices in the Google Home app

Supported smart home devices

List of supported third-party smart home devices

Step 1. Set up smart home devices

If you haven’t already done so, follow the steps provided by the device maker to set up your smart home devices.

Step 2. Connect smart home devices in the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Devices Add Works with Google Home Works with Google Home.
  3. Select the device maker from the list.
  4. To complete the setup, follow the in-app steps.

Manage your smart home devices

Set nicknames for devices

 You can choose names to call your smart home devices.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap and hold your device's tile  Settings , or More More menu  Settings .
  3. Tap Name.
  4. Enter a name and then tap Save.

Note: Nicknames are alternate ways to reference smart devices in the Google Home app. The nicknames you assign to smart devices in the Google Home app are not reflected in the device maker’s app.

Assign devices to a room

To control your devices more easily, assign them to a room in a home. You can create a new home, create a new room, or add your devices to an existing room. You can add each device to one room only. 

Note: All members of the home can control all devices in the home.

 Add the device to an existing room in your current home

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices .
  3. Tap and hold your device's tile  Settings , or More More menu  Settings .
  4. Tap Room or Placement.
  5. Choose a room and tap Next.

Add the device to a new room in your current home

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices .
  3. Tap and hold your device's tile  Settings , or More More menu  Settings .
  4. Tap Room or Placement.
  5. Select one of the existing rooms or Add a custom room. Then tap Next.
    • If you make a custom room, enter a new room name and tap Next.
    • You can also create a customized name for your device when you switch rooms.

Add the device to a room in a different home

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices ..
  3. Tap and hold your device's tile  Settings , or More More menu  Settings .
  4. Tap Home.
  5. Select the home you want to move your device to and select  Next.
  6. On the summary page, tap Move device.
  7. Choose a room for the device in the new home  Next.

Note: This action removes the device from the room in the first home. The device is still linked in the first home, but it should appear under "In your home",“Local devices” or “Linked to you” instead of the room name.

Create and manage rooms

Create a new room

You can create a new room for a device that’s already in a room.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices ..
  3.  Tap and hold your device's tile  Settings , or More More menu  Settings .
  4. Tap Room or Placement.
  5. Select a room under Create new then tap Next.

Rename a room

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Settings .
  3. Open Devices, groups & rooms.
  4. Select the room you want to update.
  5. Tap Name and type the new room name. Then tap Save.

Delete a room

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Settings .
  3. Open Devices, groups, & rooms.
  4. Select the room you want to delete.
  5. Tap Delete room.

Note: When you delete a room, any devices in it are removed. You can add them to a different room.

Check for new devices

With your voice

To do this: Say:
Sync all devices

"Hey Google" or "Ok Google, sync my devices"

Sync a device type

"Hey Google" or "Ok Google, sync my lights"

Important:

  • You must have already set up your devices in the partner app (Step 1 above).
  • If you sync multiple devices at once, you may receive a timeout error.

With the Google Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Devices Add Works with Google Home Works with Google Home.
  3. Follow the steps to set a nickname for these devices and add them to a room.
Disconnect devices from the Google Home app

Note: You can’t unlink individual devices with the Google Home app. When you unlink a service through these steps, it removes all devices by that service. If you want to unlink an individual device, remove the device from the device maker’s app then sync your devices with Google Home.

When you unlink a device from a home:

  • It disconnects the device for all members of the home
  • It unlinks the device from your Google Account

Unlink devices

  1. Make sure your devices are powered on.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app
  3. Tap Settings  and then Works with Google Home Works with Google Home.
  4. Under Linked services, tap the devices you want to disconnect, then select Unlink account..
  5. Tap Unlink to confirm your choice.

Control your smart home devices

After you connect your smart devices in the Google Home app, you can use the Google Home app to control them. If you have an Assistant-enabled device, you can also use voice commands to control your smart devices.
