Set your home, work and other location

You can set your personal locations, and then ask Google Assistant for commute times and traffic updates. If you already have a personal location in Google Maps, you’ll find it in Settings.

Important: You must use Google Assistant in English and in the US to set personal locations besides home and work.

Add, change or delete a location

  1. On your Pixel phone, open the Settings app Settings app.
  2. Tap You and then Your places.
  3. Add, change or delete an address.

Tip: You can also ask Google Assistant to set your home and work locations.

Allow Google Assistant to use your device's current location

When you give Google Assistant permission to use your current location, you'll get more helpful results when you ask for local info like weather or restaurants nearby.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Google app icon .
  2. Tap App info Info and then Permissions and then Location.
  3. Choose a location access option.

Tip: To get certain notifications when the Google Assistant app isn’t open, set location access to Allow all the time.

Create a routine that uses location as a starter

To create a routine that uses location as a starter, you need to allow the Google Assistant app location and notification permissions.

Location permissions

Important:

  • If you’re having trouble getting your routine to work, try increasing the radius of the starter up to 500 m.
  • When your mobile battery is low, the location starter routine doesn't start as reliably as when the battery is full.
  • Your battery may drain faster if location sharing is enabled with routines.
  • It takes a few minutes for the routine to execute once you arrive at or leave from the chosen location.
  • If location-based triggering isn't working, try restarting your phone.

Google app’s location permission

  1. On your Android device, touch and hold the Google app.
  2. Tap Permissions and then Location.

Tip: If you turn on both "Allow all the time" background location and "Use precise location", permission is considered as on.

Turn on device location

  1. On your Android device, open Settings.
  2. Tap Location.

Tip: If you turn on "Use location", permission is considered as on.

Age Appropriate Design Code (AADC) consent

Important: This feature is for UK users only.

  1. On your Android device, open the Google app.
  2. At the top right, tap your profile icon.
  3. Tap Settings and then Privacy and security and then Precise location.

Tip: If you turn on "Always", permission is considered as on.
