Get Nest doorbell visitor announcements on your Pixel Tablet

You can receive visitor announcements on your Pixel Tablet when someone rings your Google Nest doorbell. 

Set up Nest doorbell announcements on your Pixel Tablet

1. Set up your Pixel Tablet and Nest doorbell in the Google Home app

You'll need to set up your Nest doorbell and Pixel Tablet with Charging Speaker Dock in the Google Home app before you can set up visitor announcements.

Important: Pixel Tablet can only receive visitor announcements from Nest doorbells.

  1. Set up your Pixel Tablet in the Google Home app.
  2. Install and set up your Nest doorbell.
  3. Make sure your Nest doorbell is in the same home as your Pixel Tablet and Charging Speaker Dock.

2. Set up Hub Mode on your Pixel Tablet

To get the most out of Nest doorbell announcements, you’ll need to set up Hub Mode on your Pixel Tablet. Learn how to set up Hub Mode on your Pixel Tablet.

Important: To dock your Pixel Tablet or use Hub Mode, you need a Charging Speaker Dock. You can purchase the Pixel Tablet with or without a dock, or purchase a dock separately.

3. Turn on visitor announcements for your doorbell in the Google Home app

Newer Nest doorbell models and other compatible doorbells

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap your doorbell device's tile.
  3. Tap More More menu and then Settings and then Doorbell.
  4. Turn on Visitor announcements.

Nest doorbell (wired, 1st gen)

To turn visitor announcements on:

  1. Open the Nest app app home icon.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings Nest settings icon and then Visitor announcements. This will take you to the Google Home app.
  4. When asked, follow the on-screen prompts in the Google Home app to complete setup.

Stream video from your Nest doorbell to your Pixel Tablet

You can stream video from your doorbell in the following ways:

Stream full-screen video automatically in Hub Mode

When your Pixel Tablet is locked and docked in Hub Mode, full-screen live video will stream automatically to your tablet's screen when someone rings the doorbell.

Tap push notifications to open live stream

When your Pixel Tablet isn't in Hub Mode, you’ll get a push notification to let you know someone is at your door. You can tap the notification to view live video in the Google Home app.

View live stream any time in the Google Home app or home panel

You can also open live video at any time by tapping on your doorbell's device tile in the Google Home app or home panel. Learn how to set up and use home panel on a Pixel Tablet.

Use Quick Responses and talk to people through your Nest doorbell

Use Quick Responses

Quick Responses are pre-recorded messages that Google Nest doorbells can speak to a visitor if you’re not able to come to the door. A Quick Response is useful when you would like to respond to a visitor, but you can’t talk to them in-person, like when you’re on a phone call.

Important: Quick Responses are available when your Pixel Tablet is in Hub Mode, or by tapping on the doorbell notification when not in Hub Mode.

  1. When someone rings your Nest doorbell, the Google Home app will automatically open to Live View.
  2. Tap Quick Responses and then Select a Quick Response.

Talk to people through your Nest doorbell

You can talk to people through your Nest doorbell on your Pixel Tablet.

Important: This feature is available when your Pixel Tablet is in Hub Mode, or by tapping on the doorbell notification when not in Hub Mode.

To talk to someone through your Nest doorbell:

  1. When someone rings your Nest doorbell, the Google Home app will automatically open to Live View.
  2. Tap the microphone .
  3. The camera will chime on the other end. This lets the person in front of the camera know you're about to say something. Now you can start conversing.
  4. To hang up, tap the microphone . The camera will chime a second time on the other end, letting the other person know the conversation has concluded.
