Content Guidelines for User Profiles

All user profiles must comply with Google Maps content policies. This extends to the profile name, profile photo, any descriptions accompanying the profile, as well as content posted by that profile. Profile names, photos or descriptions that contain policy violating content may be removed, restricted or disabled. Users that violate our content policies may experience feature access restriction on the Google Maps platform.

Note that our Google-wide policies for 'About Me' information apply to profile names, photo and accompanying descriptions, in addition to the policies referenced in this article.

Please take time to familiarise yourself with our content policies. Some policies to bear in mind as you create your profile:

  • Offensive Content: Do not create profile names, photos or descriptions that contain offensive content.
  • Personal Information: Do not create profile names, photos or descriptions that contain contact information – for yourself or others. If you choose to use your own full name as your profile display name, that is permitted. Merchants with business listings on the map may also be permitted some exceptions.
  • Fake Engagement and/ or Misrepresentation: Do not use your user profile to engage in disingenuous or misleading behaviour.
  • Impersonation: Do not create profile names or photos that intend to impersonate individuals, groups or organisations for which you are unauthorised to do so. While users are permitted to use pseudonyms in their usernames, impersonation is prohibited.
  • Obscenity and Profanity: Do not create profile names or photos that contain obscenity or profanity.
  • Sexually Explicit or Adult Themed Content: Do not create profile names or photos that contain adult themed or sexually explicit behaviour.
  • Illegal Content and/or Restricted Goods: Do not create profile names or photos or use your profile in a way that contains reference to or is intended to be used for the purpose of illegal activities or the buy, sell or trade of illegal or restricted goods or services. Merchants with business listings on Google Maps may be permitted some exceptions for regulated or restricted goods and services.

Profiles of users who contribute false information, upload offensive content or take other abusive actions that violate Google's content policies can be reported for review. To report user profiles who contribute policy violating content on Google Maps, find the instructions below.

Important: Only report user profiles that contribute content that violates Google policies. Do not report users that contribute content that you don't like but is still factually accurate and relevant. Before you report user profiles, read the policy.

Be patient. It can take several days for a profile to be assessed.
