Chromecast or Google TV Streamer update is taking longer than expected

To enjoy the latest and greatest features available on your Google streaming device, update your device to the most recent software version. Update takes about 10 minutes.

To update successfully, follow the steps below:

  • Make sure that your TV is switched on.
  • Make sure that the streaming device is tightly plugged into the HDMI input in your TV.
  • Make sure that the streaming device is tightly connected to the power supply and the power supply is plugged into a wall socket.

Look at your TV to check the status of the update.

The update is still installing on the TV

When the update is being installed, a blue screen will appear on the TV with a spinner and % progress in yellow next to it. Wait for the update installation.

Once your streaming device has finished updating, you will get a 'Ready to cast' message on the TV and the streaming device will also be shown in the device list of the Google Home app.

The 'Downloading/fetching update' message appears for a long time

If the download is moving forwards but moving slowly, give the download 20–30 mins to complete. It's possible that your Internet speed is slow. If the download is stuck at a certain % for a long time, there might be something wrong in your router settings. There is a known issue with certain router configurations that can cause slow downloads. Find out more about these routers.
