Accessibility in Google Maps

You can use a screen reader, keyboard shortcuts and other features to make your Google Maps experience more accessible.

Use a screen reader

You can use Google Maps with these browsers and screen readers:

  • Chrome with ChromeVox on Chromebooks
  • Firefox with NVDA or JAWS on Windows
  • Safari with VoiceOver on Mac

Use your keyboard

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps.
  2. On your keyboard, press Tab until the map is in focus.
  3. A portion of the map will be highlighted with a square. Below the square, there will be a numbered list of places in that area. From here, you can:
    • Move around the map: Use the arrow keys. Tip: To move the map by one square, hold Shift and press the arrow keys.
    • Zoom in or out of the map: Press the Plus (+) or Minus (-) keys .
    • Learn more about a place: Press the number associated with the place.
    • Tip: If there are more than seven places in the highlighted area:
      • Press 9 to view more places.
      • Press 8 to return to previous places.

Find keyboard shortcuts

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps.
  2. Press Ctrl +/. A list of shortcuts will appear on your screen.

Find accessible public transport

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps.
  2. In the search bar, enter your destination.
  3. In the list of results, click the location that you want.
  4. Click Directions and then Public transport Public transport.
  5. Click Options.
  6. Under 'Routes', click Wheelchair accessible.
  7. Choose your route.

Enlarge your map

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps.
    • Make sure your map is in focus.
  2. To enlarge information on a map through page zoom, use your keyboard.
    • To zoom in: Press Ctrl and + or   and +
    • To zoom out: Press Ctrl + - or  + -
    • To reset: Press Ctrl + 0 or + 0.
